Real Examples of Green Technology

Green Technology

Green Technology” refers to the use of technology and science to reduce environmental damage.

Applying this approach to technology has many benefits. The most clear and fundamental of these is protecting the habitable conditions of our planet. It also has positive implications for the company’s image, motivates employees, and fosters loyalty in customers...  Even investors have taken sustainability criteria into account. So, it is a topic that interests everyone.

At SEIDOR Opentrends we believe that technology can be a lever of change towards a better and more sustainable world, and as such we are able to create the best business solutions that simultaneously reduce the carbon footprint.

Green Technology Use Cases

Sensorics, the Internet of Things (IoT), the cloud and artificial intelligence (AI) can improve operational efficiency and energy management across sectors and promote the adoption of best practices among users. This isn’t just our opinion: this is one of the lines of research by the IPCC - the panel of climate change specialists linked to the UN - as set out in its climate change mitigation report  published last April after years of work.

Well-known Green Technology use cases at SEIDOR Opentrends include IoT and data-based technologies, application implementation and user awareness campaigns, and architecture optimization.

  • Improving sustainability with IoT

Through awareness of the physical world we can improve decision-making that benefits efficiency and the environment. At SEIDOR Opentrends we have achieved this in projects such as AMB-ZBE and Sentilo.

IoT changes the way organizations manage their assets - from a reactive approach to one that is proactive, with real-time tracking and AI-driven decision-making. It implies an improvement in efficiency, productivity and transparency in the relationship between organizations, citizens and stakeholders.

  • Raising End User Awareness

We promote environmental awareness and the responsible use of energy by end users through the development of IoT-based applications in customers such as Circutor (Wibeee app) and Generalitat de Catalunya (AireCat app) and Contigo Energía.

And through our digital agency Fail Fast, we carry out campaigns to facilitate the adoption of environmental protection measures, as we have done in the implementation of a Low Emission Zone in Ciudad Real.

  • Optimizing the architecture

We build cloud-native applications and services with a platform-as-a-service (PaaS) mindset, using a modular architecture defined by software with modern microservices specifically designed to enhance not only computational efficiency but also fast and efficient scaling. We did this for example at Fira de Barcelona.

Here, public cloud providers are real allies for Green Technology: not only do they provide components for implementing serverless and highly scalable solutions, but they also strive for sustainability and undertake commitments to achieve net zero emissions in the coming years, as is the case with our partners AWS and Microsoft.

In addition, both provide us with a carbon emissions calculator associated with AWS and Azure services. Therefore, cloud architecture teams can promote and report on sustainability, as they now have the ability to quantify the carbon impact of their architectures' cloud workloads and that of the region of a data center they have selected, with information in addition to emission savings related to an on-premise data center.

These data are crucial for understanding current emissions, which components and regions generate more or less emissions, and is the first step in laying the groundwork and promoting continuous improvement in carbon emissions reduction by cloud architecture teams.

Conclusion

We've seen above how technology can help reduce an organization's footprint. But it doesn't serve any technology, nor does it serve any approach to implementing it. Don’t hesitate to contact us if you need to use technology as a lever to make a positive contribution to the environment.
